Oh nettle....this herb was a lifesaver during my pregnancy. I drank it almost every day and I swear it really gave me the energy to have a healthy pregnancy and home birth.
It's definitely not just for pregnancy. Nettles has a high mineral content and can help to build blood with those minerals. It also has a detoxifying effect on the blood and can help to move stagnation in the blood and remove metabolic waste.
Nettles is a diuretic and can dry your out. If you have a dry constitution use nettles sparingly. If you don't know what your constitution (wet, dry, cold, hot, etc.) this is what I'm here for and can help you figure out your constitution and what herbs to choose and stay away from. Because nettles is a diuretic, please use caution if you have kidney stones or any kidney disease.
I love using nettles in winter months to help build our mineral content giving us resilience in those cold, dark, winter months. This rich mineral infusion is great for a pick me up and a great defense when we find ourselves under the weather with the flu or cold.
Matthew Wood speaks to the psychological indications for nettles. Specifically “mental dullness, lack of concentration, and mental activity; tired, hard to
get out of a chair and get going, rises with a sigh or grunt, but stays on task once activated; begins the day slowly; yawning, sighing, sleepiness, pale, gray-pale face and skin tone.”
Infusions are a great and easy introduction to herbs. You don't need any special equipment and probably already have everything you need to make a great infusion.
Nettle Infusion Recipe:
1 ounce of dried organic nettles
1 quart of boiling water
Add dried herbs (approximately 1 1/2 cups) to quart jar. Pour boiling water over herbs. Cover and let steep for 4-12 hours. After steeping, pour herbs through fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. If you have one you can use a french press for this. Just make sure you've cleaned all of the coffee out so you don't get the added caffeine.
I like to make this at night before bed and drink it the next day.
The benefits of a nettle infusion go way beyond flu season. This is an infusion that can support you year round and is so easy to work into even the busiest schedule.
